The skills for this particular area are made up of the following: understanding main ideas, labelling key points, understanding sequence of events, identifying cause-andh effect relationships, identifying implications and explanations. Students are expected to practise these skills at least twice a week within the period of their lessons. Now what does this mean to you as a teacher? Firstly you must assign meaningful tasks for your students so that they have time to practise these skills outside their lessons. These tasks must also be at the correct depth level to challenge your students, but most importantly they need to be able to execute their performance effectively within a reasonable amount of time. When planning your lessons it is important that you set a target student response rate for each task. This is measured in terms of the number of students achieving an accurate response with at least 95% for each task they have been set. Now you know how many tasks you will be doing in a lesson, it is important that there are no extra tasks added on top of this, otherwise the student response rate may not be achieved because of time restraint. One extremely effective way to practise comprehension skills is through answering questions on the written examination papers. Although it may not be the most enjoyable thing to do, it will enable all students to practise skills such as evaluating main ideas and cause-effect relationships. It is also advisable that you make sure that no more than 25% of your students are asked to answer questions (especially if you are teaching a large class). So this leaves room for students who wish to write a response independently, including those who have just completed all their tasks. This can be achieved by giving independent tasks at appropriate depth levels and, if possible, within the correct period of time. The important thing with independent writing is to allow sufficient time for each student to complete their work. It is also important for you to monitor your students to check that they are writing in the correct format. Certain students will also need support throughout the writing process, just to make sure they write with structure and coherence. If you wish to use authentic material it must be graded according to the FCE reading comprehension skills. This can be done with newspapers, magazines, or hard copy response questions which already have the answers written in them (therefore giving no room for mistakes). The key point is that with authentic material, all your students will have different sources of information so it is important for you to assess their responses individually. If you are using authentic material then there is no need to do independent tasks with this. Examination papers are often the most effective way to get your students to practise comprehension skills. However, this will only be useful if you allow your students to do the same type of question which they will face in their FCE exam (for example, long and short passages). It is important for you to make sure that your students are practising with authentic material. If you can find similar questions to the ones in the FCE exam then this would be ideal.
